Temporary City Istanbul
|
The program of “Temporary City at Particular Locations 2008-2010” provides an opportunity for
cooperation among the Universities of European Capitals of Culture 2010 (ECoC). In the course
of the program architecture, urban design and planning, students of the Universities of Istanbul,
Pécs and Ruhr Area work together on the future of urban spaces in workshops hosted by the three
European Capitals of Culture.
In all three occasions a concrete urban area is introduced to workshop participants. The common:
feature of these sites is that they are strategic urban locations in need of intervention. During
a period of one week, the project entails a combination of seminars, field-work and workshops,
which culminate into an intense period of learning, thinking and producing together. Students from
partner universities work in teams of mixed groups to get acquainted with the area, to make an
analysis and to define problems and prospects in turning the study area into a viable public space,
a source providing potentially rich urban and cultural experience. As a closing act of the workshop,
they present their own explorations into the urban space in question, their investigations from
different angles and their own ideas about what the space “is” and what it wants to “become.”
In other words, this week of intense encounter with the urban space in this particular location is
expected to be a crucial exploratory step in envisioning what it is yet to be.
Upon returning back home, students draw up their proposals as entries to the international student
competition. The aim is to develop innovative or provocative concepts and ideas concerning the future
of the urban space in question and temporary interventions thereof within a certain determined budget.
The competitive designs will be evaluated and prized by an international jury. The prize winning design
will be implemented as a temporary intervention for the re-organization of urban space in 2010 along
with other ECoC related projects.
Organizers of the Temporary City program in İstanbul are Yıldız Technical University,
İstanbul Bilgi University and the İstanbul 2010 Cultural Capital Agency (İstanbul2010).
